ANA architects and Werkstatt are designing a unique cooperative residential building in the Strijp-S district of Eindhoven on behalf of the housing corporation Trudo. The building will comprise approximately 225 rental homes, along with commercial spaces and a residence for young adults with limited life expectancy or intensive care needs. Housing cooperative Klein Zwitserland is involved in developing the communal aspect of the project.

Trudo and Klein Zwitserland share the vision of providing fair and affordable housing to individuals with a middle-income level who prefer city living. The residential building will feature a diverse program, including smaller units for one or two-person households and larger apartments for families. Some units will also be designated for groups. The housing cooperative will function as a management cooperative, where a group of residents will rent a portion of approximately 60 Trudo-owned units. The possibility of collective ownership is being explored in the future.

The residential building will be located along Kastanjelaan, on the outskirts of Strijp-S, and will connect to the Schoot neighbourhood to the south (part of Oud-Strijp). To the north, the building block will integrate with the scale of the former Philips factories. An internal meandering route within the building will facilitate a connection between the intimacy of Oud-Strijp and the robust environment of Strijp-S.

As a future resident group, the housing cooperative will be involved in determining the spatial aspects of the design, such as shared facilities, meeting spaces, communal living areas, rooftop gardens, and an inner courtyard. The residential building will become a true ‘co-living community’ with shared living at its core. The residence for young adults will consist of approximately 14 units and will be an integral part of the residential block, with access to communal spaces, inner courtyards, and rooftop gardens.

The new residential building is part of the transformation of the final section of Strijp-S, a former industrial area near the centre of Eindhoven known for its iconic and experimental buildings like Haasje Over and the Trudo Tower by Stefano Boeri.

Jannie Vinke, ANA architects: ‘It is an honour to create a new residential building with a unique living program in one of the most inspiring locations in Eindhoven. This project allows us to fully express our expertise in designing distinctive living spaces, and it’s fantastic that we get to work on this culmination of such a special area development.’

Construction of the residential building is expected to commence in early 2025.
