The complex has both a residential function and an office function. It serves as a link between the small-scale self-build housing on the Steigereiland and the project-based complexes along the IJburglaan.

The building is designed on the basis of the principles of Open Building and has a separation of the various layers: load-bearing structure, access, systems and fixtures and fittings. Internal walls can be moved and rooms made larger or smaller with minor alterations. The entire floor plan of the building can be drastically changed with a larger modification.

By creating a changeable live/work building, it caters for all possible developments in the residential and office market. The homes and business units can be laid out in various ways and tailored to personal living and working requirements.
