At the 14th edition of the International World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Lisbon, Robin Wood was voted the best future residential building in the ‘WAF Future Project – Residential’ category.
On Center Island IJburg in Amsterdam, Robin Wood is being built: the most sustainable, affordable wooden city block in the Netherlands for the middle rental segment. There will be 165 flexible homes for a broad target group. From affordable homes in the mid-rent to private sector homes for larger families and live/work homes. The layouts are flexibly adaptable, extending the life of the building and allowing homes to change with residents’ living preferences.
With the Robin Wood project, Edwin Oostmeijer Projectontwikkeling and MaMa Pioneers are fully committed to industrial-scale manufactured modular wood construction as a solution to the housing market crisis and climate change. Robin Wood is a revolution in modular, prefabricated construction in solid wood and creating residential communities with social cohesion. ANA Architects and Marc Koehler Architects jointly designed it. The completion of the project is scheduled for 2024.
From the jury’s report
The jury praised the building for its combination of modular timber construction with great attention to creating a diverse, lively community in an urban village. The building’s flexibility, high level of sustainability and strong branding from design to management were widely appreciated.
Marc Koehler (Marc Koehler Architects)
‘Designing with wooden modular elements allows us to benefit from design efficiency and economies of scale while continuously improving the concept. For me, Robin Wood is a textbook example of the new society. To have this recognized by the renowned WAF with an award is a crown to our joint effort.’
Marcel van der Lubbe (ANA architects)
‘With Robin Wood, we are taking the next step in sustainable, modular and affordable housing. Robin Wood shows that this ambition goes well with a wide variety of flexible, quality housing, a Tiny Forest and high-quality collective spaces for all users. That Robin Wood is not there yet, but is already winning awards, says something about our level of ambition.’
