O’ase: nature-inclusive ensemble

O’ase is a striking ensemble of three unusual buildings in Sloterdijk-Centrum. For this tender on Lot O, ANA designed a sturdy corner block with wooden stacked clusters that provide a fine human scale for living, working and recreation.

The building features different housing typologies, ranging from compact studios to large maisonettes. The wooden grids are loose around the building, creating an interspace that serves as a filter between the dwelling and the city. All of the area’s transport options will be made optimally accessible by including three entrances in the building’s plinth and a large bicycle parking facility that is accessible from all sides.

The building is a stacking of small volumes that provide a fine human scale in the still unenchanting Sloterdijk. These volumes consist of different housing typologies, ranging from compact 50-square-meter studios to large 160-square-meter maisonettes, providing a fitting home for many different Amsterdam residents.

With the plans for Sloterdijk-Centrum, a new opportunity will be created to bring the city and nature closer together. O’ase, on the corner of the Arlandaweg and the Radarweg, is like a rocky landscape on this green axis. The gardens are situated at different heights and have different characters due to their orientation with regard to the sun and the wind, as well as their layout and plants and shrubs.

O’ase has a warm and layered look that matches its surroundings with its grey buildings, as well as the new Sloterdijk district as a fine place to live. The wooden grids fit loosely around the building, creating an in-between space that serves as a filter between home and city.
